The House of Spices was once one of the most notable houses in Stone Town, belonging to an old family of spice traders. Spices from the islands of Pemba and Zanzibar were brought to the house and once selected, they were ground, packed and exported to Europe and the Americas. The house has been kept in good order and any restoration work has followed the original plans that go back through the many years of its history. Even though more than 200 years have passed since it was built, the House of Spices still carries the romance and atmosphere of an old Arab house.
